Gopal Baba Walangkar was the first to officially petition the British government to demand military rights for the untouchables. As a retired soldier of the Mahar regiment, he understood that a community denied the right to bear arms and defend itself is a community destined for slavery.
In 1888, he started Vital-Vidhvansak, the first newspaper dedicated entirely to the destruction of untouchability. He traveled village to village, mobilizing our people, showing us that protest is not just about begging for rights, but aggressively demanding our share in state machinery and administration.
